When Silence Speaks Volumes

When words can be so powerful, why do we remain silent?

TORONTO, Ont. - Azadeh Kangarani’s Echoes of My Silence to Make North American Debut at Toronto Fringe Festival

When words can be so powerful, why do we remain silent?

This is the urgent question explored by award winning director, performer, and playwright Azadeh Kangarani in Echoes of My Silence. The 75-minute solo show is making its North American debut at Soulpepper Theatre as part of The Toronto Fringe Festival this July.

Following its world premiere at the Nad Prahou Půlměsíc Festival in Prague, Czech Republic

(November 2023), Echoes of My Silence continues Kangarani’s signature approach to layered storytelling and intercultural dialogue. The play explores how women navigate power, silence, and survival - tracing deeply personal encounters that challenge not only societal norms but also Kangarani's own internalized beliefs.

The journey is sparked by a fleeting moment aboard a transatlantic flight, when Kangarani instinctively questions the presence of a young female pilot in a traditionally "male" role, shattering her own self-image of fairness and objectivity.

Through humor, vulnerability, and raw honesty, Kangarani invites audiences to examine the consequences of sexual repression, internalized gender roles, and trauma that shape our lives. Echoes of My Silence transforms deeply personal experiences into universal reflections on the courage to confront one's own silence.

"I shape stories from what was once unsaid -- turning silence into a language that can speak across borders." -- Azadeh Kangarani

Echoes of My Silence is not a traditional memoir but a mosaic of lived experience — intimate

yet widely resonant, offering audiences an unflinching exploration of voice, identity, and

agency.
